1. Education Overview

   Hungary has a well-structured education system. The level of education is among the top in the World, especially in medical, economics and technology. Up until now, Hungary has cultivated 14 Nobel Prize winners, among which 10 of winners are in the medical, biology, and chemistry field. Education in Hungary emphasize on independent thinking, creativity and practical use. This education philosophy led to the creation of radio, television, computer, roller-pens, vitamins, soda, Rubik’s cube, and helicopter, etc. These inventions have made great contribution to human culture and technology development.

   The education philosophy in Hungary is to respect each and every student as an individual, focusing on academic performances as well as manners. It aims to provide a free and relax learning environment to the children for a happy childhood. School becomes a big playground for the children to explore. It is aim to inspire. The children will read with a question in mind, thinking to find answers, discuss with their peers and lastly summarized and concluded by the teacher. The focus of the education is on the self-learning and thinking process of the children, but not on the long explanation by the teachers. Examinations in Hungary focus on testing the student’s ability to understand, think, analyze and explain, creativity and not simply on ability to memorize and understand.

   Hungary attracts many international students by its high quality of education. According to the survey done by AVA, Hungary is among the top 6 of the most popular international studies. In 1997, Hungary signed an agreement with China to recognize qualifications and professional designations obtained in both Hungary and China. Because Hungary is and EU country, its higher education is also part of EU’s higher education. The degree and credits obtained in Hungary is also transferable to other European countries.

2. Education System

   Hungary has a 12 year public education system. Elementary school is 8 years (equivalent of grade 1 to second year of middle school in China) and 4 years in Middle school (equivalent of third year of middle school to third year of senior high school in China). Public school is free. The main language of instruction is Hungarian. Schools also offer English and German as second language. In addition to the public schools, there are also various private schools, different language schools, and religious school of your choice.

   University in Hungary is 4-6 years depending on the subject of study. Medical schools are 7 years. Common language of instruction is Hungarian, but many schools offers courses in English to attract international students. Higher education in Hungary is famous for medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, biotechnology, nursing, engineering, architecture, economics art and music. Many schools offers programs in English for international students.

School year in Hungary has 2 terms, autumn terms has 15 weeks from mid-September to Christmas. From mid-December to end of January is the examination period. Spring term starts from Feburary to mid-May. From mid-May to end of June is the second examination period. There is 1 weeks of holiday between the 2 terms and July and August in the summer is the summer holiday.

3. Public School Application

   Elementary school in Hungary is 8 years, equivalent of grade 1 to second year of middle school in China. The pre-requisite in entering a public elementary school in Hungary is language. The schools usually doesn’t have Hungarian preparation classes. Children need to participate in extra-curricular language training courses for their Hungarian learning. For children attending lower grades, the schools usually doesn’t require Hungarian language proficiency exam. It is easier for the children to blend in the education system. For children attending higher grades, school usually requires Hungarian language proficiency exam. If the school feels that he child does not possess enough language ability to handle the work at school, they may be assigned to a grade lower. To help the child to gain language proficiency in short period of time, parents usually register children for language training courses and/or private tutors.

   Hungarian middle school is 4 years, equivalent to third year of middle school to third year of senior high school in China. During this period, if the child does not master basic Hungarian, it will be difficult for them to go to public schools. They will need intensive Hungarian training. The schools will require Hungarian language proficiency exam upon application to school. If the exam result is not desirable, it will be difficult for the children to enter the public schools in Hungary.

4. International Schools in Hungary

   In addition to the public schools, there also various International Schools whose language of instruction is English or multi-languages. These international schools offers courses from kindergarten to senior high school and a tuition is required.

   Most international elementary schools do not test for language proficiency for lower grades, higher grades needs to do simple English proficiency test. International middle schools requires English proficiency and some schools requires interview. If the language proficiency is not desirable, the student will be assigned to a lower grade.

   Language of instruction in the international schools are English, French, and German. Mathematics are taught in a more international ways, focusing on children’s creativity, and nurturing independent thinking ability. A few middle schools introduced the International Baccalaureate, IB program to enable the children who graduated from these international schools to have a broader development and they can apply to universities using the credits gained via the IB program.

Higher education in Hungary is offered by public and non-public schools. Currently three 19 universities authorized and recognized by the Ministry of Education of Hungary, (State University), 9 state college. Hungary adopts the bachelor-master-PhD system. Bachelor degree usually takes 3-4 years to acquire (180-240ECTS), master degree is around 1-2 years (60-120ECTS), and PhD takes at least 3 years. However, traditional school system is adopted in the few and professional field such as medicine and law. Most leading courses can be offered in foreign languages, such as English, German and French. Annual costs for public university in Hungary is around 200-400 Euro per year. Permanent resident international students are being charged at the same rate as the local students.
